The Patron Squirrels

by Jubal Lee Young

Almost everyone has heard of the many benevolent entities out there in our world. Fairies and sprites, guardian angels and ancestral spirits, demi-gods and minor deities, nymphs and gnomes. And of course, Patron Saints. But few are aware of the Patron Squirrels.

Patron squirrels are everywhere, friends! That squirrel that ran out in front of your car this morning, and that you then called a “Dumb ass!”, as you rumbled and grumbled along on your way to work was one. That squirrel created a butterfly effect when it caused you to tap your breaks that, unbeknownst to you and the other motorist who would have been involved, caused just enough of a delay to save your very lives.

Yet, you never suspected. These cosmic, magical creatures act in our best interest every day.

And what do we do to repay them? Chase them away from the bird feeders and unleash our hounds from our back doors without warning.

My fellow humans, please take a moment to thank a squirrel today. They are here for us. Always.
